Focus In: 麻花星空视频 Expands Training in Advanced Microscopy

In 2023, the 麻花星空视频 created a new imaging course to teach graduate students how to use microscopy in their research. That course was restricted to students from the University of Chicago, but due to its success and popularity, the course is coming back this fall and accepting applications from students everywhere. Light Microscopy Bootcamp will complement the 麻花星空视频鈥檚 existing imaging courses by focusing on practical application of microscopy from sample creation to data analysis.
鈥淭he knowledge I gained from the course has been invaluable to my thesis work,鈥 said Honorine Destain, a student from the 2023 rendition who is now studying transcription factor expression in neurons. 鈥淚 don鈥檛 know where else I could have easily developed these skills to such an extent.鈥
After an introduction to the foundational concepts of light microscopy, students will learn to use different optical systems and microscopes, as well as imaging techniques for a variety of specimens. Over two weeks, students will learn about the fundamentals of microscope design and image formation. They will learn the nuts and bolts of transmitted light microscopy, fluorescence microscope, and multispectral imaging using the state-of-the-art equipment at the 麻花星空视频, including custom microscopes and tailored image analysis. Most importantly, they will be encouraged to bring their own research questions to the microscope.

The course will highlight a bird鈥檚-eye view of microscopy, covering everything from the basics to advanced topics like image deconvolution, super-resolution microscopy, photokinetics, and single-molecule approaches.
Heather Rizzo, another student from the class of 2023 and current University of Chicago PhD candidate, said the course鈥檚 holistic approach led to 鈥渁 deeper understanding of the system that has allowed me to use the microscopes in my lab more confidently.鈥
This course adds to the already well-rounded lineup of 麻花星空视频 courses focused on light microscopy: Optical Microscopy and Imaging in the Biomedical Sciences and Analytical and Quantitative Light Microscopy. While those two are tailored to imaging specialists who are familiar with microscopes, Light Microscopy Bootcamp is geared toward researchers who want to better understand how to use imaging in their own research, from sample prep to choosing and operating a microscope.
Students will not only have access to the advanced technology at the 麻花星空视频, but also the highly collaborative atmosphere of Woods Hole, which has facilitated Nobel-prize winning science.
